I received a phone call from an unknown number saying they were a collection agency and had been in touch with an attorney about trying to collect the debt of an old Bank of America account debt from 2017, and this was a final attempt to collect the debt before I was served court papers. The unknown number gave me the attorney's phone number, 844-233-1953, as well as a reference number, and when I called they even had a receptionist answering the phone. When transferred to Leanna (who did not have an accent), she notified me I had an unpaid balance of 10,774 dollars, but the debt collection agency was willing to settle for 5,372. She was pleasant, but pushing for me to make a deposit now to show "good faith". I even asked them to send me something to show all this and they emailed me an electronic signature form with the account number and other information. It even included the last 4 of my social security number. I did my own research, and couldn't find the attorney's office, or that attorney's name, and I even researched their phone number, all finding nothing. I then called Bank of America, and after speaking with the checking department, fraud department, and another department, they concluded it was a scammer trying to con me and advised me to contact the BBB, as well as my credit company's to make sure they had not been hacked. I am not an easy one to fool and am fully aware of scam tactics, but this one almost had me. Submitting this hoping to save someone else a heart attack!
