We found a house we'd like to check out on a website listing such houses. We were told that house was already filled, but he had another house near the original house we liked that was also for rent and he sent us the link. We liked the house, so we asked to tour it, and had no trouble in setting up a time and receiving the code to get the key for the house to look around. We liked it, so we were asked then to fill out an application and were sent the link. I filled it out and submitted it with no problems. I was asked then to pay the application fee via Zelle so the person and his wife would review the application and get back to us. I couldn't use Zelle without great difficulty, so requested via Paypal and had no trouble, including the extra fee Paypal charges, so total was $51.75 so far. The application required my social security number as well as a picture of the front and back of my drivers license and a selfie of me with my license, as well as a copy of a utility bill or pay stub. After a few hours, we were informed that they were fine with my application and that they would rent the house to us. Next step was for us to sign the lease they would send to us, having already signed it themselves, and pay the rent and security deposit, which was as much as the rent. He requested we send it through bank transfer and gave us his wife's account information including name, address, account number, routing number, bank name and address. I did try to set it up, but it was difficult wit my bank so I requested another method like CashApp. He gave us a cashtag of another person's name, $MikePayton6. We signed the lease, paid the rent and after his review he was ready for us to have the key...except then he mentioned the utilities, for us to pay it for 3 months and then he would give us the key. So, we paid and he gave us code for the key and then requested we not move in until the evening of the day the lease said we have possession of the house. So, we toured the house one more time, now seeing blue painters' tape over the sinks and toilets and a sign on the kitchen counter saying the house was winterized so please do not use toilets, and planned to come back the evening of the day the lease began, 2 days later.

When we came back, there was a For Rent sign in the yard that wasn't there before, and when we called the number it was not valid, the locks had been changed so our key did not work, and the "landlord" did not respond to any of our calls or texts and he had always been responsive previously. The lease had said that the landlord was responsible for having all the locks changed within 7 days of the beginning of the lease, so that alone wasn't enough to be an immediate concern. However, with everything else, and a neighbor reporting that there had been someone else very upset and claiming she had a signed contract for that house when there were people touring it...there is apparently an ongoing practice of defrauding people interested in this house.

In phone conversations, the "landowner" has an indian accent and talked a lot about covid and keeping things distant, especially when being desired to meet in person.
