An official pop up appeared on one of the web pages I was viewing from Safari on my Mac, stating that my Mac had been infected by a virus and so had been locked, and that I should for no reason shut it down or else I risked loosing valuable information I would never be able to retrieve. It gave the number 1-844-307-5973 as Apple Tech Support, stating that I should call immediately for help fixing the problem. I called the number, thinking it was apple and I gave them remote access to my computer. They looked into the history of my recent activity and appeared to be diagnosing when I got the virus and were also showing me multiple error messages that had been going on my computer for the past week. They then proceeded to tell me that this was a network infection and someone had gained access to all of my information and there was nothing they could help me with and they would have to refer me to one of their companies out of NJ called EGeeks who would be able to fix my problem over the phone for a fee. They were very detailed, gave me a case number, contact number, tech name, employee code, email address, and lots of other instructions on a note and saved it to my desktop. Thinking that this was legitimately apple, I allowed them to "transfer me." EGeeks quickly reassured me that they could fix my problem but would have to install an anti-virus software on my computer. They removed the bug, installed Sophos anti-virus software, and gave me 3 options of protection (1-year $395, 2 year $495, or 3 year $595 w/ a $195/year renewal charge). I selected the cheapest option and he pulled up a Echeck on my screen for me to fill out to EGeeks. Thinking this was legitimately apple who transferred me, I filled out the check. Their contact number is 1-800-982-1482. I called them back and told them I wanted to get a refund and did not want their product and thought they were associated with a scam. They got defensive but informed me they would send me back my money because they were not a scam as scammers do not fix the problem as they had done and do not refund money. They sent me an email and told me they would refund my money within 3-4 business days. They have not taken the money out of my account but called me back three times the following day trying to get me to give them access to my computer again so they can "refund" me the money they have not taken out of my account yet. I am weary that they will take money soon as they have my checking account info. When I informed him that no money has been taken from my bank account he argued with me that it has because it was in their account, but then i double checked and reassured him nothing has happened on my account and he hung up the phone. I have talked to multiple people with the company and every one of the members has an Indian accent, including the initial apple tech support person I contacted. I have received calls from EGeek representatives on numbers in Jackson, CA and North Fort Meyers, FL and blocked caller ID.
