I was contacted by [email protected] informing me they'd received my application for their open position to hire a Copy Editor/Proofreader. As I applied to jobs in bulk and copy editing is well within my professional skill set, I didn't question this. The rest of the communications took place over Microsoft Teams with a Ray Buckman. His grammar wasn't immaculate but I attributed that to this being a Norwegian company. Anyway, I was asked to proceed with a job interview via text in Teams which I "passed" and was then asked to provide standard new hiring information; fill out an I-9, sign two letters of employment and pass along a picture of my passport. This sensitive information (including my SS#) is what I'm most concerned about. I returned those forms to the original email and his Microsoft Team account. I was told I'd be paid $27 an hour, which hadn't been the original pay rate. When I told Ray that, he took a few minutes and then told me I was correct and would be paid the larger sum. Then I was asked to print out and mobile deposit a check to buy a MacBook Pro I'd use for the job- they had specified before hiring I'd need a "mini home office" but I assumed they meant technology I already own. Anyway, it was Ray's impatience for me to deposit the check that raised my suspicions and I realized that his email address didn't match the other email address's on Egmont's site. I lied to Ray and said my phone's camera was broken so I'd have to deposit the check in person and he said he'd mail the check and be in touch by 9 AM tomorrow morning (which is today). I haven't heard from him since. By the by, I have no proof he's in the UK except that I asked what his time zone is and he said GMT.
