Applying for ein tax number for non profit which turns out is free with the IRS

Fake site requesting a fee …friend paid it thinking it was legit !

On 12/22/23 I went online to fill out an application for an EIN number. I thought I was on an IRS website and was actually on a third party website. Know that these are free. This company charged me $295. Per the website I was supposed to receive the EIN number that day and shortly after I applied, I received a second email stating that there was a problem and they asked a few more questions. I was under the impression at that point that it should take about a month to process. A couple of days ago, I called the IRS to inquire the status and was told that they never sent emails out. Once I started researching, I realized that I had gone through a third party company. I emailed the company a couple of times per the contact us form on their website. No phone number is listed. They did not reply. Once I started researching the company, I realized that there are several complaints to the Better Business Bureau and people claim that they have been scammed. I have contacted my bank and they are going to open an investigation on this.
