The seller is Austin Elmer & he’s the owner of ‘Elmer’s Automotive Repair’ in Olathe. He completely misrepresented the car he sold me. He confidently claimed to have conducted a comprehensive inspection of the car and assured us that the only issue it had was a faulty ABS sensor in need of replacement. He promised to order the piece that day and offered to fix it himself, free of charge, if we decided to buy the car. We took it on a drive with him. I asked about the crunchy, delayed brakes. He reassured me that was due to the switch he was replacing. He said this car was a personal sale for his Uncle, so he could assure us the car was in excellent shape and he had taken care of everything.
We chatted for a while at his shop. He seemed reliable, personable, & polite. We bought the car. Less than 24 hours later, the car would not start. Austin came over, jumped the car, and took a look under the hood. With the help of my Uncle, we found the air conditioner had been hot wired. This led to the air conditioner running constantly, even when the car was off, resulting in the battery being drained. Although he was unable to resolve the AC issue at the time, he promised to address it later in the week when the ABS component arrived, as he still intended to replace the sensor.
More issues kept arising. On June 8th, Austin informed me the piece finally came in and that he was sick, but he’d fix my car over the weekend. That is when he stopped communicating with us completely. An oil leak started the following week. I was able to schedule an appointment with a trusted auto shop to address the leak, the air conditioner, and the ABS— as well as a full diagnostic of the vehicle. After a full inspection, the Owner called us in to the shop so he could show us what he found. He said in the 50 years he’s worked there, this was the worst case of rust and corrosion he’s ever seen. Here’s a list of what he discovered:?
* The oil leak is from the front axel drive.
* The ABS issue was most likely rust in the bearing and not the sensor.
* The backing plates (brake plates) are severely corroded including the right one rusted in two.
* The brake pads are only hitting on part of the rotor.
* Trailing arms connecting axle to chassis are severely corroded and are very fragile and could break.
* The shocks are bad.
* The upper right control arm is severely corroded.
* If you wanted to remove the spare tire you would probably have to cut off the wheel due to the corrosion and rust (he told us it was fine.)
* Upper A-arm is badly corroded.
* The tires are splitting and would have to be replaced.
The scariest thing he said was if it wasn’t for the oil leak, he would not have put the car up on the rack and discovered the condition of the underside, the lack of integrity, and danger in driving the car. He informed me that if I was driving on the highway and any of the above-mentioned corroded pieces would have snapped it could have been fatal for me.
The Mechanic stated it was too dangerous to be allowed out on the road and should never have been sold in the first place. He told me that since Austin owns an auto repair shop, he must have known these issues at the time of the car sale.
I messaged the above information, including pictures and videos of the car to Austin. I gave him the opportunity to make it right. Less than a minute later, he blocked me on my phone and all social media platforms.
While I’m exploring all steps I can’t take, I wanted to reach out to you first in hopes that no one else gets taken advantage of or hurt.
If you need more information, I have photos and videos. I have also found other reviews where people have had similar experiences.
He had been previously blocked from certain facebook groups he was selling in due to suspicious activity.
