The scammer sent an unsolicited email to a coworker of mine, having gotten their information from the public film production directory. The email was a job listing for Production Assistant job opportunity for a short film titled “A Beautiful Soul.” The scammer, by the name of Leslie Jordan, was offering $1200 for the pre-production phase, where I would run errands and pick up equipment for the company ahead of production for the film starting Sept. 23rd. They were offering an additional $1800 once filming commenced. They asked that I sign a deal memo after they reviewed my resume and basic information. I signed it. It was a standard deal memo but not super official, which wasn’t suspicious for an independent short film. However, Leslie Jordan did not request an interview process or meeting before the pre-production job commenced. Once the deal memo was signed, they sent a check for $4,940 - a cashier check issued by Three Fifths Bank. They asked that I deposit it, show proof of receipt and then my duties would begin. They were impatient about me responding and making sure I was diligent upon receiving the check. They then insisted that I add the money to cash app or open a PayPal account, but once I was unable to add the funds to those accounts, they requested that I go to the post office and issue money orders so that the funds could be sent to the production manager in Ontario, Canada. This was the first red flag as if the job was real they would not have sent me the money first without verifying who I am, and they wouldn’t have used me to send the money. They could have done it themselves. Once the money orders were created, they gave me an address in Canada to send it to, to the receiving name “Cody Smith.” Once sent I awaited further instructions for the next day, for which they requested I do the same thing: when cash app would not let me add the amount I went to the post office, purchased money orders and sent them to the “production manager.” I sent a total of $3550 in money orders. Only hours later, the original check for $4940 was bounced and returned to my account because the bank could “Not Locate” the money. However, the funds were no longer in my account because they were taken out for the money orders, which left me with overdraft fees from the bounced check. When I tried contacting the liaison, Leslie Jordan, they said they were getting in touch with the bank to fix it but after refusing to speak to me on the phone they no longer responded. The funds were never returned to my account. Upon contacting the building where the money orders were sent, there was evidence of the package with Cody Smith’s name on it but there was way to retrieve the package. I have since lost contact with Leslie Jordan and these names and the production company “True Love Productions” are non-existent.
