I applied for a job using the website Indeed to a company showing as Y & L Consulting. There is a legitimate company by that name, so I applied. I was contacted via email by a "recruiter" and instructed that the initial interview would be done using a web application called SIGNAL. After I had downloaded the app, I was to contact Nelson Grant via that app at +12076055064 and advise him I was ready for my interview. While unconventional, the interview was pretty straightforward and done entirely via this messaging app. Paperwork was sent via email for me to review and sign and immediately send back via the app. It was a contract stating that they would be providing the equipment needed to start the position noting responsibility and the return of the equipment should I leave the position. Fairly typical work equipment contract. I was then advised that I would be provided with a tracking number for the equipment the following day, after the funding was released. The following day I was met with the excuse of the courier not being able to deliver the check and now they would be sending the check directly to me for the purchase of the equipment. A check was emailed to me and I was instructed to print it out, cut the check to size (there was also a copy of the back of a check included as well where I was supposed to endorse it), sign the check and deposit it via my MOBILE BANKING APP. The company is located in Texas. The check was a check from the Broward County Sheriff Office. When I asked why the check would have the name of a Sheriff's office listed, I was told that it was where their financial department was located. Ummm, ok, right. I played along and told him I had deposited the check and funds would be available Tuesday and where should I go to pick up my equipment. No straight answer. Now he's currently asking me via the app if I can afford to put out any money to "cover the cost of the timetracker" as we are getting close to my start date. I've reported the scam to Indeed, the company itself (who is aware and working diligently to resolve), the FBI and the Broward County Sheriff's Office (since it was their name on the check). Beware. This one went as far as creating contracts, a fake site, and using the names of legitimate people in the real company.
