Type of a scam Charity
He quickly turned and shyly asked if he could have my help with raising money for some public speaking competition in Madrid, Spain. I first told him we weren't interested. He was so soft-spoken, I could not understand all of what he was supposed to be raising money for.
All of a sudden, this young man seemed to come alive...I guess he didn't want to accept rejection. He asked if I was not interested in his fundraising, and I asked him whether this involved me buying something. Immediately, he interrupted with just one word, "donation". I repeated, "donation?"
Then came his speech about how his mom was the one actually in charge of the fund, and they had tried go fund me accounts and other ways, so this was his last resort. He went on to tell me he was here with his grandparents, was sure I knew them, and proceeded to name both first and last names. I told him I did not know them as we recently purchased the home as well as asking him a few more questions.
Tho I was almost positive it was a charity scam, I wanted to make sure. So, I asked if he was in school locally (as he first made it sound like he was doing this with a school group); he assured me he was, but now it was his mom's friend who was the fundraiser. We didn't even get to what I had to do to "donate", as I requested the name of the company, the contact person, and the phone number, he gave me the info with a defeated sigh.
I finally told him I would talk it over with my husband and if we agreed, I would go to the website or phone the contact, Mr. Bartlett, and donate. He thanked me for my time and seemed to disappear before my eyes, he was gone so quickly.
Tho I didn't buy into what he was selling, I am very concerned that this neighborhood has quite a few elderly folks, who might be more easily taken in by this handsome, clean-cut kid. They might make a donation for nothing in return and worse, with the little money they have, just wanting to help.
I am thinking seriously about (also) filing a report about this young man with the local sheriff's dept., as we are under county jurisdiction. Unfortunately, being that it's a Saturday, I may have to wait until the next business day, Monday. By then, this young man and any culpable adults might be long gone.
