A personable young woman went door to door in my neighborhood doing magazine sales. The twist was she wasn't selling magazines for you to receive at your home. Instead, she said the subscriptions would go to women's shelters and YMCAs as a charitable gift. She represented herself as working for Entrepreneurs Sales LLC out of Indiana. She had a well rehearsed story about uplifting herself from past choices and circumstances and explained very forthrightly that she gets a cut of sales and that she is trying to raise her station in life by learning work skills. Moved by her story, at first I agreed to gift two magazines to the YMCA for $75 plus a $15 handling fee and wrote her a check, after which she moved on to my neighbors house. But some parts of the interaction didn't add up to me, so I looked up the company online and grew concerned. Its ScamPulse.com accreditation had been revoked. It had an F rating. People said it was a scam and that ordered materials never came. I also noticed that Hustler and Penthouse magazine were among the options I could send to YMCAs and women's shelters -- made no sense.

I asked her which YMCA will get the magazines I ordered. She said she was glad I asked and showed me the name of a YMCA in Arizona. I asked how many magazines they could possibly need, since she sells magazines six days a week and had netted six subscriptions just on my block. She didn't really have an answer for that. I grew suspicious enough to ask for my check back and sent her on her way. Then I called the YMCA she purported to support. They have had calls like this before - and verified immediately for me that they don't receive any donated magazines and never have. What a great scam - sell people on your up-from-poverty bootstraps story, tell people they are sending magazines to charities, then have your company just pocket the money instead. 99% of people will never follow up to find out that their money went for nothing.
