Type of a scam Employment
Then, this scammer "hired" me via email, without so much as a Skype or FaceTime interview, and said that "my first task would be mailed to my house." Odd, but okay. He refused to say what it was before it got to my house. Once it got there, it was a check for a little less than $2,000, which I was supposed to "keep" $250 of, and then turn around and write a new check out of my bank account and WIRE the MONEY via WALMART to some random person in California. The back story is that the scammer "couldn't do it himself as he is out of the country on business," despite the "address" the check was supposedly sent from on the USPS Priority Mail envelope is some random warehouse already in California. This was the address: Scripps Ranch Marketplace, 297 Convair Ave Set 2, Chico, CA, 95973-8698. To make it even better, the scammer threatened me, a LAW STUDENT, via broken English with "a legal action if I didn't complete the job" in his emails after he was aware I had received the bogus check. I informed him that all of his materials and evidence had been turned in to the authorities and he stopped contacting me, but it's still a little unnerving that he has my name and address because they were on the cover letter/resume that I sent in when I applied for the job. However, I notified the Dean of the law school in charge of internships about this scam and action was immediately taken to both take down the ad and notify the rest of the law schools on the internship network to take down any similar ads they may have received.
