Type of a scam Travel/Vacations
EscTimeshare sales scam. “A firm, claiming to be Santa Fe Business Brokers Realty” (Santafebusinessrealty.com,) using the legitimate “Santa Fe Business Brokers” name with fake “Realty” added, contacted us by telephone and offered to buy back our membership in El Cid Resort in Mazatlan, Mexico. This call was followed by a written offer, dated 5 August 2020, for $18,900 USD. We accepted this generous offer by email. This was followed by a form to establish an Escrow Account with Citibanamex from George Garcia from a Escrow Initiatives Ltd. in Cincinnati, OH (escrowinitives.com - escrowinitiatives.com), which was done in the amount of $18,900, plus $3325 in an advanced reimbursement for a license fee that we had to apy with a wire transfer to an attorney in Mexico City (M. Ortega); forms in Spanish purporting to be these licenses were returned by email. Shortly thereafter, we received a “Sales Agreement”, from “Brokers Realty”, signed by a Phillip G. Goldberg. Numerous phone calls with “Brokers Realty” personnel and Mr. Garcia were followed by a “Closing Agreement”. On 1 September 2020, we received an email with an attached bill from the Sinaloa State, Mexico for 4,445 for taxes due on the total amount in the escrow account (20% tax); allegedly, the entire amount in escrow had been sequestered by the Mexican Government and had been seized pending full payment of the tax. We balked and calls from two “realtors”, Harry Brawley, Melda McPhaul, plus a ANglo woman whose name we missed, pressuring us to pay the tax. We then contacted the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce and the real Santa Fe Business Brokers, headed by Sam Goldberg, and found that whole thing had been an elaborate scam. We have all the above referenced documents in our file.
