Worried she was being scammed, she called me, and I talked with the foreman, Tyler. I told him we needed him to stop work and get an itemized estimate. After caling his boss - apparently in Springfield, OH - he lowered the price to $2500 for me. I said we still needed an estimate, and noted that a $3,000 price decrease was nice, but didn't make me trust their pricing.
Then I got a call from Randy, the owner, who asked me about the young men who'd alreay started trimming branches on my mom's little birch tree. I said I'd pay them $50 each for their hour-ish of labor. He told me they had a $500 minimum fee. I told him they should have had an estimate and a contract, and then, when he persisted, told him I'd had enough and they should leave.
When I walked out, they were throwing branches over my mom's fence. One of them threatened to "drop the tree" on my mom's house and tried to get me to fight him on the sidewalk.
The same day, I had a representative from a reputable tree service come out to my mom's. He said the trees supposedly needing $5000 or so in treatment needed exactly $0 in treatment - although he did recommend a sort of preventive spray for about $200 a year. This was a scam that meant to prey on my mom.

(937) 624-7261 They were at our neighbor’s house across the street cutting weeds, branches, and shrubs. I approached the foreman (not the owner) and asked if they could cut down a dead ash tree behind my fence and chop it into firewood. I took him to the back and showed him the tree and then showed him the firewood pieces I had stacked up. He told me he would check with his boss. 10 minutes later he came back and said they could do it for $300 and I agreed. When they came, they cut down the tree and began to cut the trunk into very large pieces and left them in my yard. I went out and approached the owner (Randy Graham) and asked him if they were going to cut those large pieces of the trunk into firewood. He said (while jumping in my face) "We don't do that, Mister!" I, in a calm voice, told him his foreman agreed to do that as I showed him some of the cut firewood we had on our terrace. He grew angrier and stepped forward and was inches away from my nose and said, "are you calling me a liar? Are you?!!" I told him no, that I had spoken with his foreman. That's when he said, "Well, you just got him fired!!" I hope that you are happy now!" Let’s go boys!" They picked up their chain saws and left the tree where it fell and walked off. He yelled back, "I guess you got your tree cut down for free, huh?!! (Expletive)
