A person with an ID tag, "Excite," came to the door and asked if we had had problems with either our Comcast Internet or TV service. We had been working with Comcast to resolve a several-months-old TV issue, so we said yes. He said his company was a consultant for Comcast and that since the latter did not want to lose "triple-play" customers (which we are), they were authorizing Excite to arrange for our switching providers from Comcast to Direct TV.
We of course learned that Comcast has no arrangement of any kind with Direct TV. Nor are they affiliated in any way with Excite. (I did learn, however--from the Internet), that 15 years ago or so, Comcast did use a company called Excite in some direct way. But not any more.
Scam clues: (1) He did not have a business card. (2) The tel. number (see above) was answered by someone saying, "You have reached 507 ...... Please leave a message and we will call you back." (3) He gave us a "Customer Order Form" that had no company name on it.
An odd thing: The Excite rep told us that if we didn't want to call the number he gave us, to go to the Comcast customer service center (near us, in Orem, UT) and they would make the arrangements. Since that action was guaranteed to ruin the whole scheme, I have no idea why he would have said that.
The 507- number (located in Minnesota, apparently) did not return my call (called twice).
