I had already done a picture search with a couple of search engines. The first one turned up nothing. The second one turned up what appeared to be the original litter that their son had supposedly adopted from. Everything seemed to be legit.
The first red flag was the next day when I still had not received any verification of my payment and the promised flight information. The original email promised that the courier service should receive the payment in minutes, but more than 20 hours had passed since I had sent the payment and I get a call and then a text from them. The pet courier service wanted a screenshot of my recent bank transactions to supposedly confirm that the money had come out of my account. I refused and accused them of being a scam. They kept saying they had not received the money even though my bank and Zelle confirmed that they had received the money. I let the owner know what was going on. After the first incident, he asked that I be patient and stay calm as he had used this service in the past and so had a cousin, with good results. I thought it was strange that he ask me to stay calm as I was just emailing him what had happened. I had only expressed irritation with the customer service man on the phone.
Express Pet Shippers/Xpress Pet Shippers finally did confirm receipt of the payment almost 24 hours after I sent it. Then, the next morning, 2 days after first contact with Hendricks Wills, Express Pet said they were at the airport and could only proceed if I provided $1200, refundable insurance. No mention of this amount was made beforehand.
I attempted to find a way to make this work, and thank God I could not provide them with the amount via the forms of payment they accepted. (They claimed that they had some data breaches and credit card numbers were stolen so they had lost the ability to process credit card payments. I'm actually studying cybersecurity and knew that was a real issue.)
I emailed Hendrick Wills once I realized I would not be able to provide them with this insurance. He never responded. I attempted to email the company to let them know I could not provide that type of insurance, reimbursed or not. Even though we had just exchanged 17 emails within three hours, suddenly my email server decided it was spam and blocked me from sending the email.
I have since emailed the Hendricks with no response.
I finally Googled the address Hendrick Wills had given me at the start (I wish I had have done that initially). The address was tied to several puppy scams, which would explain why the courier service has not been in contact even though I never let them know I wouldn't be able to provide insurance. The two were in league. So once one knew they couldn't get any more money out of me, the other stopped trying. If there truly were a dog sitting at the airport all day, they most surely would have been in contact to complete things.
I requested a refund. They said a refund would happen at delivery. I let them know that I knew this was a scam and to refund me the amount or I would contact the authorities. I have not received a response.
Here are all of the email addresses involved during the scam:
