Facebook Marketplace Drum Set Mover Reports & Reviews (1)

- Bakersfield, CA, USA • Dec 22, 2024

A drum set was posted on Facebook Marketplace indicating it was in Glendale CA. I inquired on Nov 19th, 2024. The lister said he posted it for his sister ("Dr Sandra Williams") and to contact her via email. I emailed her ([email protected]) she said she wanted to give it away because it belonged to her late husband who recently passed and didn't want the memory of it in her midst. Judging by the info and pics on FB Marketplace, I figured the set was worth $2000-$4000. She went onto say she had already moved, and the movers already packed it/took it and gave me a link to contact them on their website via their chat system to arrange to have it shipped to me. I asked if it included everything that was pictured in the FB post, to which she assured me it did. I contacted the movers, gave them her reference number (B9DRUM10JAF). They told me they were in Carson City and could ship it to me in Bakersfield, CA offering two rates for either 3-day or 7-day service. I chose the least expensive 7-day service for a fee of $230. He said for payment they only accepted Venmo, Chime or Apple Card. I asked why not a normal credit card, to which he said they only take those for payments over $1000. I reluctantly agreed and paid Via Venmo. He said it would be delivered the Sunday after Thanksgiving (7 days from then). While he was waiting for the Venmo payment to show received, i asked if the Holiday would delay the delivery, and he said it would not. He then confirmed the payment received and processed at said I would have it on the 30th. He said I would get an email the next day with the tracking number to confirm delivery status. Then he said oh, wait...sorry, there's a mandatory insurance fee I have to pay. He said it was $200. I said no, this doesn't sound right. He apologized, I said let me talk to your boss on the phone now. that never happened. I reluctantly paid another $150 for the "insurance". Dr Sanda and I exchanged multiple emails, and she said there would be no issues, and I have the drum set soon. A couple days later I the email, so I set up another chat with Safe Movers to verify delivery date. I was then told there's an outstanding balance on her account of $300 and that they will not ship it until it is paid. I eamil Sandra, she say she had paid 600 of her 900 balmce and didn't think the remaining 300 would prevent shipment. She said she was visiting her daughter (never said where) who just had her first baby and needed her help. She said she wouldn't have to $300 for another week...but if I could pay it she would pay me back. I foolishly considered this for a day or so and decided ok. I contact Safe Mover again, Venmo them $300. A few minutes later I receive a Venmo payment for $300. They then tell me they don't accept Venmo anymore, but I can send them an Apple Card payment. to which I (foolishly) try. but Apple rejects it (smelling the scam) and blocks the transfer. I tell Safe Mover I suspect a scam. I email Sandr, who says she'll figure something out and have them ship me the drums. She emails me again saying her son-in-law paid it, the drums have been shipped, will I please repay her. I tell her when and if I actually get the drums and they are what was advertised, I'd then pay her $300. A couple more days go by, and I contact the movers, who tell me the drums have been shipped, but there's still the $300 balance due, and if it isn't paid before the delivery date (12/23) they would stop the shipment. I notify Sanda, she admits she lied about it being paid, but told the movers I would pay it so they could get the drums in transit. I contacted them today (12/22), told them I'm expecting delivery tomorrow... they said they would have to stop shipment since it hasn't been paid yet.... when will I be sending them the Apple Card? I told them I'm not giving them (losing) any more money. They have told me I'm not entitled to a refund since an invoice was already created. They also told me I could not druve (6hours one way) to them and pick up the drum set there.

So many red flags....and yet I fell for it anyway. ..... ugh, I'm disgusted with myself. (you can imagine how my wife feels...)

I would be awesome if your office could follow up with them, but I'm sure they don't care and will keep ripping of naive people like me (but I'm not as naive as I was a month ago!).

Thank you
