Scammers posted a Facebook marketplace offer for a free upright piano. After reaching out to the person offering the free piano the person, who was going by the name Brittany with a women’s picture, messages back and says she has posted this piano for her sister who is moving to Canada (from Michigan) because her husband recently passed away. She asks that you email her sister for more details about picking up the piano and she messages the contact information for her sister. She also says she’s going to tell her sister that you are emailing so she’ll reply back. Upon emailing the sister, you find her name is Rebecca and she tells you that her recently deceased husband would not want her to sell his piano but instead find someone who will enjoy and enjoy love it as much as he did. Rebecca then tells you that the piano is with the movers and tells you the piano will need to be rerouted to you for delivery. She mentions there might be a small fee for rerouting the delivery. Afterwards she contacts again saying she just got a hold of the movers and all you (the victim) need to do is chat with them on their website and provide them with a referral number (she’ll give this to you with a link to their website) so they can help you with rerouting the delivery to your address.

The website she links you to is a spoof site of what appears to be a real piano movers website based out of Pennsylvania. Once you click on the live chat the person on the other side of the chat immediately knows what you are reaching out to do (reroute a piano) and immediately requests your full name, email, phone and full address. I did not provide my contact details and asked a question back to them. They stopped responding and I restarted the chat still looking for more information. They pressed for my information which I still wouldn’t provide. I finally was able to have them provide me a quote for the shipping, $450-650 depending on delivery speed. They asked me to confirm that I wanted to proceed with my delivery. I stopped replying to their chat. Later, I emailed Rebecca back to tell her, the movers wanted $450 at the least, to deliver a free piano and that was too much for local delivery. They replied saying the mover have $150 of their money which they’ll add to my payment. The English is broken just enough.
