Fake Exhibit Space Offer Scam Reports & Reviews (1)

- Chicago, IL, USA • Sep 07, 2024

I was approached by Focus Photo Magazine to be a booth sponsor for the 2024 Red Dot Miami show Dec 4-8 for $2,500 which would include visibility and representation. When I explained my max was $500, the said they had a limited sponsorship at that level (1ST RED FLAG). They sent me a contract (attached) and when I went to pay the invoice from Melio, it was blocked. They said Melio was having technical issues and wanted me to make another payment through PayPal (SECOND RED FLAG). I withdrew from the offer.

The Publisher, Robert McFarland, contacted me again and said they understood my frustration so were offering me another perk – 6 feet of display space for my famed prints. I thought this perk outweighed the risk, The asked me to use PayPal’s “friends and Family” payment option because the regular service was going to “hold their payment for 6 months” and they needed the payment for upcoming booth fees (THIRD RED FLAG). I did follow their direction but luckily, PayPal declined to process the $500 transaction due to “fraudulent suspicion”.

I spoke with a PayPal representation who confirmed:

- The did NOT hold regular transaction for six months, and

- If I used the “Friends and Family” transaction, I was giving up on any company resources to challenge or regain fraudulent transactions.

We would appreciate it if you sent $500 via PayPal to [address requested for payment]. When you send it, PayPal will ask you if you want to send it friends and family. We would appreciate it if you did that so PayPal doesn’t hold the money for six weeks. Alternatively, we could send you a money request on cash app.

Robert - This plan to ship unframed prints sounds good and well-thought out for handling the framing. How do you want me to arrange for payment for tomorrow 9/6?

Adam - Should we still speak next week to narrow down the choices of prints to include and select which should be framed? Am I correct we held Thursday 9/12 at 10 AM Central time to speak? I'm flexible if I have the date/time wrong. Glad we'll be working together. Steve

P.S. Robert - Under a separate email, I am sending the portfolio sample I sent previously to Adam in case you have any feedback on which prints should be priorities for inclusion or framing to share with Adam when he and I follow-up next week.

It would be less expensive if you shipped unframed prints and let us frame them for you for the weekend. We would take the cost out of your sales (say 4 framed 16 x 20 prints) the cost would be nominal… maybe $250 for the frames.

After the show is over, we’d ship you back the unsold unframed prints.

You’ll still have your art rack of unframed prints.

Robert - I've been thinking about your generous offer. I was frustrated, and was impressed with your offer.

If I am providing 16 x 20 framed prints, how many would be displayed in the 6 feet of wall space?

Would I be able to send frames with plexiglass or acetate so they would not be prone to breakage in shipping?

If I have other unframed prints, how would visitors to the show be able to see them? Trays?

Thanks again. [Me]

Thank you for your kind offer. I'm going to hold off this year and hope to make it to the Red Dot in the future. Best of luck with the event. [Me}

[My name],

I understand how frustrating this may be, however; since we must prepay for our participation in the event, we need to ensure that all of our exhibitors do the same.

If you’d like to reconsider, we’ll offer you 6 feet of wall space for framed prints for the $500 payment.

Let me know your thoughts.

I'm very unhappy with the way this has been managed, the urgent need for immediate payment, the poor vendor, and your inability to manage this without involving me and a second payment. I won't be moving ahead with this project. Please don't contact me again. [Me]

Hi [my name],

As the publisher and editor of Focus, I deeply apologize for this issue. From what I can tell, you scheduled a payment this morning with Melio to our organization. Melio reached out and informed us that they are experiencing technical difficulties and will not be able to process your payment. If you are concerned about the payment processing twice, please log back into Melio and cancel the scheduled payment. This will ensure that you have not been charged twice.

Adam - I am not going to make a second payment while another payment is being "resolved". This is your vendor and is a business issue for you to resolve internally so I am not faced with the possibility of two payments being charged to me. [Me]
