These guys scam people who are not savvy with computer technology.
I own a Mac. my computer froze and I received a pop-up in my browser saying my computer was in a critically bad way and to call this number listed. It looked legit, like it came from Mac. I called. A man with a thick Indian accent said he was a Mac engineer and persuaded me to give him remote access to my computer. He brought up a screen that showed i had all kinds of computer problems and that if i didn't act just then, my computer could be permanently unusable. He gave me options. take it to an address in Snohomish where it would take 3+ days to fix for 350 or do a one time online fix for 249. It was extremely high pressure. It felt suspicious, but because Macs are renown for not getting viruses i thought it would have been impossible for my computer to get a trojan virus.
They asked for name address, computer password, credit card info etc... then i received another call from another engineer who was actually going to do the actual help. All he did was download a free add-block from the mac menu and essentially nothing else; the download was just a ruse to have personal information.
I googled the address they gave me for the Mac engineer in Snohomish and called their number. However, the phone number was bogus, it was a residential family's number. When he was done he opened my gmail and said i had to send him an email to say the work was complete. i said i did not want to do that because i didn't know what he had done and that i did not have a chance to even inspect his work, there was no way i could know if any problem was fixed.
