It is with great concern, humiliation and under duress that I am contacting you in regards to an illegal gambling operation that I mistakenly fell prey to and I am seeking your assistance. While I consider the monies that I paid into the raffle pot a loss, it is important that you look into this enterprise, as the organizers were so successful with raising the funds for this first online raffle, that they are planning another raffle with an even bigger buy-in where they have intentions on victimizing as many people as they can online.
Let me start from the beginning. Rosalind Knight established a Facebook group and hosts a YouTube (Choppin It Up With Ros) channel starting in 2020. Earlier this year, on top of revenues received from legal means through Facebook and youTube partnership programs, Rosalind decided that she would capitalize on the members that she had convinced to join her group by devising a plan to collect money under one premise and as the collection pot increased, the initial terms that she collected the funds under began to be fluid in nature and they changed often.
When the idea was introduced on air (recordings are available) it was marketed with a Ponzi scheme ideology, telling the members that if they all contributed $30 they would receive a $475 return on their investment in a period of about 6 months. Although, Rosalind Knight asserts that about 300 people paid to enter the raffle, disgruntled people started questioning the amount she was reporting because her group on Facebook had well over 2,700 people in the group. The money started pouring in and she was receiving raffle entry payments through Cash App, Zelle and through money orders mailed to her home. She promised that everyone participant would receive an updated running tally of all monies received and that never did occur.
Rosalind began getting frustrated with being questioned about how she was conducting her investment pool and people started asking for their money back. Once this started happening, Rosalind and her daughter, Mahjanee Crenshaw, esq., refused refunds, stating that it was a donation and began making threats of violence and public shaming for anyone who dared to change their mind about their participation in the investment pool. They also changed the parameters and began saying that the people had made donations to a charitable cause, needy families, and that donations are non-refundable. Even though payees emphasized the fact that their payments were dues not donations, they were denied.
On November 13, 2022, Rosalind held the raffle publicly and made wire transfers across state lines under less than savory pretenses. It should be noted that Rosalind Knight, allegedly has her YouTube profits under her daughter’s name, Mahjanee Crenshaw, in order to circumvent regulations surrounding tax liability and her receipt of short term disability. Rosalind Knight nor Mahjanee Crenshaw have a 501(c)3 status, so they should have not conducted this display of gambling on the internet, but her attorney daughter advised that this statute does not pertain to them because they did not provide actual paper tickets. It can be argued that virtual tickets were distributed and names were added to the “stocking” according to the verification of money paid to participate. This is actually where a lot of the confusion came in because sound, statistical measures for fairness were not exercised and a boatload of money went unaccounted for.
Even more concerning in this entire situation, is the fact that there are a number of senior citizens who were swindled and are in the process of filing an inquiry to the Department of Aging so that they can determine whether or not financial abuse has occurred. She used intimidation tactics against the elderly when they began to ask for their money back by announcing their names in live broadcasts with thousands of people present and threatening to research and post personally identifiable information (PII) on YouTube and Facebook if they challenged her.
Complaints are also being submitted to the Better Business Bureau, Department of
Consumer Affairs, Local Police Departments, Internal Revenue Service, Franchise Tax Board and the Federal Trade Commission so I will not riddle this letter with the rest of the concerns that fall under their jurisdiction, however, it is imperative that you know a raffle drawing was held and plans are in the works for another one with a much larger buy-in required.
The problem here is not with the willing participants who were okay with such fluid rules and regulations for participation, but I am not one of them. I pride myself on making informed decisions and given my financial situation, when I was offered a $475 return on a $30 investment, I jumped at the chance. It was downhill from there and I have been ignored and insulted publicly.
It is my hope that you are able to step in and direct Choppin It Up With Ros on the legal way to hold a raffle in California. I was duped and intimidated by her online supporters and it does not feel good.
Thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this letter.
Respectfully submitted,
