Salesman knocked forcefully on my door in the middle of the day. Explained he was selling magazines as a way to get back on his feet, and that he was studying real estate. Had a pamphlet with several pages of magazines. Was very friendly, heavyset young black man. I wanted to be kind and open-hearted and help him out, so unfortunately wrote a check for $68 for a single subscription. He gave me a receipt. As soon as he left, I looked up the website and company listed on the receipt, and sure enough--nothing to be found except links to magazine sales fraud articles. I called the bank to cancel the check and it will be stopped tomorrow, but I imagine they will cash it today. I called the police non-emergency line, but will need to call back later today to file a report.
