A family owns a small restaurant which the wife runs while the husband works construction. Person called the restaurant phone saying they were from "the Gas Company" and were going to disconnect the gas unless they were paid $396.20. Wife asked why they didn't sent a disconnect notice in mail. She was told they did but her husband ignored it. Wife called husband very upset, even though he told her he mailed the Gas payment, she was worried about the gas being shut off at the restaurant. Husband was busy at work & told wife to go ahead and pay it. She was instructed by caller to buy a "re-load pre-paid card" and they will call her back to get the numbers. Wife bought the card but then got a 2nd call saying they were actually 3 months behind and now need to send $410.00 for a total of $806.20. Husband bought the 2nd "re-load card" since the wife had no cash left. They each scratched off the code on back of cards and read them to caller. Husband received a 3rd call saying that their residential acct is past due in amount of $310. He asked caller what address and when caller gave a different family member's address, he realized it was a scam and hung up. A Police report was made. Police advised them that the real gas company "NIPSCO" would never call them demanding money on pre-paid re-load cards. In the future, if they get calls again from any utility company, they should tell them they will call them back at the customer service number listed on their bill.
