Total money lost $500
Type of a scam Counterfeit Product
In order to do this I allowed the company per their insistence remote access to my computer and they did some work on it (legitimate updates, tune-up sort of stuff) and installed McAfee. The "customer service " reps were VERY professional and clearly educated, every bit as much as the Microsoft representatives I dealt with TODAY in fixing the issue. All of them had a south Asian accent, probably Indian. Specifically they provided me a Customer ID number and repeatedly told me to avoid any potential scammers by always asking for this number if I am ever contacted by somebody claiming to be from their company. Within a couple months of initial payment I was indeed getting such calls from people claiming to be from AmericaGeeks (NOT GeekAmericas) who could not reproduce my ID number. When I asked them as instructed for such, they immediately hung up and when I called the GeekAmericas phone number with which I was provided, they told me yes, THOSE guys are the scammers.
In December 2017 I got the blank-screen again and contacted the company, and like an [censored] agreed to pay $500 (minus the $80 or whatever I already paid) for a "lifetime" security package for this computer or any other computer. They again tuned the thing up (legitimately, I havent had any security issues since that time). THEN, within a few months I was again getting phone calls from AmericaGeeks, this time saying the company had went out of business and needed to refund my money. Contacting GeekAmericas, they told me to ignore that, it was the scammers. The phone calls continued and today I tried to contact GeekAmericas to find all contacts invalid, and discovered other consumer complaints. The rep I spoke to today was named Kevin at 877-957-6017 and said he would need access to my computer to refund my money, but could not tell me ANYTHING about my account and wanted to know the amount I had paid. Thats when I realized I was screwed and called Microsoft and paid $150 for a clean-up and a year of security, today.
The scam was so sophisticated and realistic, with operators and billing and tech-support reps, I had faith in the company right til the bitter end.
