Type of a scam Online Purchase
While googling “Secretary of State renewing drivers license” the site appeared and asked questions just like SOS or DMV. After a few questions and then providing a payment method which happened much faster than normal, a message appeared stating I had just made a purchase for a BOOK! I called immediately and explained that the site must have been rerouted and I don’t need a book and would kindly like a full refund. Initially I was told, “No, that’s why we have disclosures.” I explained that the site was asking the same questions and I was misled and I had zero intentions of utilizing a book because I just want to renew my license via the internet. I was told, “I’ll refund $19.99, but you will still receive a $3.95 processing fee.” I disputed this conversation and explained that not only do I intend to receive a FULL refund, I would also be contacting my credit card company and filing a complaint. After being interrupted multiple times the person on the other line told me,”I’ll make an exception and credit the $3.95 as well.” Shady, shady, shady!!!
After calling my credit card company I was informed that this business has been misleading people for at least 6 years and that “We get calls all the time about this company in particular!” Please be aware of tactics that “shady” companies utilize and don’t give up and give in. Also, most credit card companies are phenomenal at assisting if it’s needed to resolve such issues as described. Unfortunately, if using a debit card that takes funds out immediately, it’s more difficult and usually the outcome is not the same.
