I reached out for help with setting up my Canon printer. I went to the website listed on the Canon instructions and video on YouTube. The website stated that the printer model I entered encountered a fatal error and was unable to download the driver needed for setup. I clicked on the chat feature and submitted a form. I was told a technician would call me. I got a call from a technician named “Bruce” at 980-655-9550. Bruce sent me a link so he could access my computer remotely and said I had so many viruses and that’s what was preventing my printer from connecting. He then constantly asked how many other devices I had in the home and how that these “viruses” could jump from device and infect each other. He shared it would different price points for the length of protection I chose. I was confused on how I called to get my printer set up and we got here. He was starting to get frustrated and said they are a 3rd party subcontracted to assist in these things. That sounded super suspicious and I asked him how again how did we get here. He said if the price was an issue he could give me one year service for $40 and that should be okay. I told him no thanks but would reconsider if I needed the services. He got upset and said I need to pay them and I told him no, I didn’t ask for this and not what I needed. He began to yell and I said that this was illegal and would be reporting it. Bruce said that he would sue me and come after me. I was shaking and so scared that this person had access to my computer and potentially private information! I found the correct number for the real canon customer service line and reported it. They shared that this company redirects people who are going to what they think is the canon website. This way this fake company gobal alliance assistance is able to contact you and claim you need all of this antivirus help. This company is disgusting and should be shut down!
