Type of a scam Tech Support
After printer was solved, he said, let me show you why this might have happened. He showed me some of my systems files, where a bunch of kernel files were reported as Stopped. He pointed out that it appeared that many drivers were no longer updating. (I realize now of course that none of that has to do with paper jamming under my paper drawer!) Well, my computer and laptop have been glitchy for awhile, and no amount of malware/system scanning has revealed the issues. So…yes…I “bit.”
The person claimed to be Joshua Johnson from a company called Global Protek. Their services were provided under their other name, Expert IT. They are supposedly Microsoft-licensed technical people, meaning they are competent to work on Windows system (as HE explained it.) I tried to ask about his connection with HP…no luck there.
OK. Here are the procedures I agreed to: (DUH)
-Let him link to my system to show me HP video about removing the paper—it worked.
-Paid $89 twice to “clean” my PC and laptop—well, they ARE both running with no more glitches.
-Paid what I know to be fair market price for him to install McAfee Total Protection on both computers, 3 years license. The software Key numbers appear to be legit, and have received notifications directly from McAfee.
-Paid what I know to be fair market price for him to install Office 2016 on my 2 computers…both installs appeared to use legit software Key numbers. (Tech guy pointed out that my old Office 2007 wasn’t getting updates since 2014 (I knew that)…and that the disconnect between Office 2007 and my installed Windows 10 could be causing glitches. (Questionable, but I “bit.”)
-Paid what I thought was a reasonable price for ongoing support for 1 year from Global Protek. (DUH)
-Paid using an echeck, which means of course they have my bank acct number, but as bank pointed out…everyone who gets a check from me or processes an auto-pay also has it. No illegitimate bank transactions SO FAR…
I realized later that this was very possibly a scam, looking up info on the FTC.gov site about Tech Fraud. I filed a report with FTC and with HP fraud department. Because, when I contacted Microsoft to verify the validity of the Office 2016 software, they informed me the product key numbers Protek used were fraudulent. I then signed on for Microsoft tech report ($149 for a year) and they scanned both my laptop and desktop, and found them full of malware installed by Global Protek. It has taken 4 days working on my own and with Microsoft to get my systems safe and secure. I am monitoring my checking account; so far no false transactions. Also changed all my passwords on multiple websites where I handle financial transactions: banks, paypal, Amazon, etc.
