I opened my laptop, and the screen had a warning that my IP address was compromised. My keyboard was frozen, bot the warning gave an 800 number to call. The warning suggested that Microsoft was the source of help. I called the number and was given the impression that the technician was not part of Microsoft but worked for GNFIX and was authorized to resolve the situation. I let them access control of my computer and they led me through an elaborate and convincing explanation that IP Address had been compromised and that I needed to install firewall protection. I agreed to this for a $799 fee made payable to Wowser eServices. I then went through a lengthy process of paying them with a check, which they scanned and processed electronically. They then went through a lengthy process of installing software. When the call was completed, My wife expressed concern that I had been scammed. We searched the internet and found that others had problems with Wowser eServices. I then contacted Microsoft support. Their technician identified the changes to my computer as a scam, and removed all the changes they had installed. I then processed a stop payment on the check. I reported the problem to BBB; they agreed that this was a scam, but could not take action because the organization was not registered as a business. In a follow up call the scammer made, I informed them of my actions, and they hung up.
