Type of a scam Employment
I obliged, being out of a job for months and having bills to pay. They soon reached out with followup questions about how often I could work, my access to mobile deposit for checks, etc. via [email protected]. I answered, they soon contacted me saying my "background checks" had been verified. The following week, they sent me a digital check - forged I'm sure - with the name of a company located in Alabama. I was to deposit this $1990 check and inform them when it deposited. The next day when it did, they told me to keep $450 for myself as payment, and $1540 was to go towards buying gift cards. An additional $26.80 was charged as activation fees that was promised to be returned during the following week's work.
They requested back and front screenshots of the gift cards - acquired as three $500 gift cards and one $40 one. Once validated, they thanked me. The next day, they attempted identify theft, getting me to provide an id.me login. I responded with apprehension, being knowledgeable at least about this much to never give a login. There was no response, and later that night, I received a chargeback for the $1990.
(I contacted the police and a grand larceny investigation is also underway.)
