Buyer Beware Story for spring - summer travelers.
Time to renew passports for those summer trips? There are websites that make consumers think they are "renewing online" which is not possible yet with the US DEPT OF STATE.
Website is, at best, intentionally misleading users to think they are paying to “renew their passport online.” The text, colors and design are all intended to trick the consumer to think they are on the US Travel Passport website and gauge consumers into paying an exorbitant fee to generate an online form and mailing label.
1. Online renewal is not possible with the US Department of State.
2. I didn’t see the Disclaimer as it is in such small font and nor did I click on the “I understand” button and I was allowed to continue the process.
• On a smart phone it is particularly small and un-noticeable.
• Not having to click it to process to the forms makes the Disclaimer moot and defeats the purpose of allowing the consumer to make an educated decision on the “service” he/she is agreeing to purchase. This is of course by design. Consumer regulation enforcement is overburdened, and I am sure they disclaimer "checked the box" for some compliance regulation but the company clearly purposely didn't make the button functional. If you click it, it simply moves the page down a slight scroll. It is not, in any way, shape or form, meeting the requirements of a Disclaimer as a consumer protection that banks and other businesses or entities are required to comply.
In addition, when putting in the payment information, the website should have a disclaimer ensuring the consumer agrees that the fee is for the form, instructions, and a mailing label, and that is a third-party service and to renew the passport requires additional fees and mailing the form to the US DEPT OF STATE.
This site also asks to store your credit card information, which is concerning, because this is not a consumer website that you would visit often and use frequently.
The actual company name cannot be found anywhere on the website making it impossible to look it up as an entity on the web. The About us is intentionally written vaguely.
While the email does state you can reply to the email with questions or concerns (which I did), I think if the email goes to SPAM/JUNK that again forces a consumer to figure that out first to have recourse, which I think the elderly and less technically educated would figure out. The website does have a "contact us" page, that forces you to put in a request form. There is no business address or phone number which I think, is again by design. This website is designed to make it difficult for the elderly and less technical savvy to ask questions or complain/request a refund. Most would likely give up, maybe never even knowing that they got the email, because the email goes to SPAM/JUNK because so many spam-services have flagged this site as spam. So, for their $88, they may not even get the form and mailing label.
There is maybe a value for this service, but it's simply a form generator, simplified instructions, and a mailing label, (which you can get for free at any mail services or USPS office), and for that, I think $88.83 is too much. Having said that, I think the issue is that it is misleading the consumer, and even I, a former documentation and UI/UX designer/expert fell for it when in a rush on my phone to get my passport renewed.
I hope this information will help caution people and prevent more people from paying and realizing later, it wasn't submitting their application for renewal.
I did email and received an email offering a "discount" twice, which also is telling to me that they know what they are doing isn't valued at what they are charging. Because I was firm and expressed all that is stated above very firmly was eventually given the 100% refund. I will attach the email.
