Facebook Messenger by a woman who identified herself as a member of my church (and today 10/15 I confirmed that she does not use
Facebook Messenger. She asked if I heard of her wonderful news, that she and husband had received a monetary award and that she saw my name on the award list and asked if I had received my money yet. I had not heard of this. She gave me the number of an agent to contact and instructed me to begin texting with that individual. Once I made contact, the man who identified himself as Thomas Williams Eric said I was an award winner and proceeded to ask for verifying info such as my name, phone number, address.
There was a back and forth and the agent also forwarded photos seemingly giving legitimacy to the award. The party
then said in order to complete processing and avoid negative tax consequences, I was to purchase a VISA Vanilla Card
in the amount of $500 and provide images (back and front) by way of texting which I did. He later directed me to provide an image of the receipt. He said my award was being processed and I would receive payment on Tuesday. He instructed me (and the supposed church lady also instructed me) that I was not to tell anyone about the award or delivery. With hindsight I realize how absurd it was that the "church lady" was also urging haste for me to buy the credit card and forward it. The real woman did nothing of the sort. With hindsight I now realize how odd it was that we didn't use email or phone. I cannot tell you where this operator was based from. I researched online and there is a real Gradient Grant Foundation program based in Minnesota. They do offer financial assistance but people need to apply for it.
