- The reference he had provided refused to speak to us, preferring only to communicate by text (this reference turned out to be a likely accomplice in this scam)
- We requested a FaceTime or video chat with Copeland to see the puppy and were told that his son who helps with video calls was only going to be at home a few days later, however requested that we sign the contract and make payment immediately to avoid loosing the puppy to another family interested in adopting him! Given the above and that Copeland was requesting a wire transfer for payment, we became suspicious.
- We then noticed that all the puppies on the site claimed to be CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) registered, yet this "3rd generation breeder" supposedly resided in Arizona (therefore precluding them to register any dogs with the Canadian association), when we asked for the CKC registration #, we were denied
- We requested making payment by PayPal to take advantage of the extra security - we were denied
- We asked for the veterinarian contact info - we were denied
- When we called to verify the bank information that was provided, Chase bank confirmed only that the name on the account was indeed correct however the address associated with the account was different (perhaps he is also an identity fraudster?)
- We checked the website URL registration and noticed that the site was only 14 days old! Registered Oct 31, 2021 (Remember - this is supposedly a 3rd generation of Bernedoodle breeders!)
- We received a nasty email form Copeland this morning stating that due to the fact that we are asking so many questions, we clearly have a tryst issue and therefore he has decided to sell the puppy to another family instead! Thankfully we narrowly escaped this scam!
We're posting this experience to help prevent this scammer from cheating others out of their money.
