It was not completely clear to me when adding the DLC content to my store “cart,” what platform I was allowed to redeem the content through. I was concerned about this, but the sale was a flash sale and usually they sell out of license keys quite quickly. So I reviewed their return policy and based on their policy and promises I felt safe to purchase the content and then later research if the key would work on the platform where I already owned the base game (required to use the DLC). Upon purchasing, I received an email that made it clear that not only was the key only allowed to be redeemed through one specific platform, but GMG chose to directly email me the license key. Now is when it was made very clear to me I was not going to be able to use/redeem the DLC at all, because I do not own the base game on the only platform they were allowing redemption through, so I contacted their customer support assuming their bold promise around returns would mean they would help me. Their reply was curt and they simply hid behind their return policy by copying-and-pasting the policy into the email and said since I was in possession of the key they would not allow a return.
The industry standard around selling digital license keys online is: when the consumer completes their purchase, they aren’t directly delivered the keys. You are taken to your order page and are presented with a button that says “activate product & receive your key,” when you press that button you are presented with a pop-up that makes it very very clear that you are about to give up your right to refund your purchase. This is to protect both the consumer and the seller, and to allow refunds to be possible. GMG skipped all of that. By directly sending me the key without my consent they literally made their return policy void and then when I asked for a refund they blamed me for already having the key so they can’t refund me. They are making it sound like they allow refunds when they’re actually selling content that should be labeled as ALL SALES FINAL. If I had known this purchase literally would have no refund ability, I never would have made the purchase. For example – the website Newegg, they sell digital license keys for video games. On the cart page and then again on their purchase page it is made VERY clear there are no returns allowed on the digital purchase. I know exactly what I’m getting into with them.
I am sure there are many others who are being scammed this way by this company. Purchasing a license key that is not made clear what platform it is redeemable through, having a return policy that makes you feel very confident in GMG fixing any issues, and then GMG sends the license key directly to the consumer so they can claim the return policy doesn’t count for you since you already have the key.
GMG has since changed the product page and it’s now clear there is only one platform they allow the product to be redeemed through, which was not the case when I made my purchase.
I want my $15.12 refunded and for others to be warned of this refund policy scam. I have not and cannot redeem the license key and won’t be redeeming it. I have attached screenshots of the refund policy and proof showing they do not warn their customers that the purchase they are making will not be protected and will be all-sales-final.
Thank you for your help in advance.
