My family member called 800-711-4779 to contact one of our utility providers. The agent answered & said the provider was giving each caller a $25.00 Walmart gift card + $100.00 in coupons as a part of the “Affordability Act” provided by the utility company funded by the federal government. Unfortunately they got her credit/debit card #, email, mailing address, etc. She asked me to speak with them because their accents were so thick she couldn’t understand what they were saying. I realized it was a scam, told them to cancel it & wanted a confirmation #. Agent wouldn’t comply & told me they already billed her $2.95 for s/h. I asked for a return phone number, to which I received 303-002-6215 (yep, fake). I asked to be put on with a Supervisor & the agent got mad, but did eventually put me on the phone with a “Supervisor”. The Super wanted me to confirm her credit card #, I said a series of ones (1) & he explained that she had already been charged the money and that I had to confirm the credit card number. Back and forth we went until he said she hadn’t been charged the $2.95. I asked for a confirmation # of the cancelled transaction - of course I didn’t get one because “they never charged her”. I asked for a return phone number. Every time he gave me one I called it on my burner phone - none of them were to connect with these yahoos, though the phone numbers were to legit companies like Senior Citizens organizations, DirectTV, etc. He muted me for 5 minutes & then I was disconnected.
