I found a property listing near me and inquired about it. The alleged scammer responded and recommended that I approach the home, take a look in the windows, and get back with him. I sent my fiance' and one of our friends to take a look. All the while the alleged scammer was corresponding with me and had emailed me a generic Rental Application to complete. My fiance' and our friend called when they arrived at the property and informed me that there was a realtor sign in the yard and a note posted on the front door stating that the house was not for rent and not to send any money. Already having a strange feeling, I pushed the feeling to the side after hearing about the realtor sign because the alleged scammer did mention the sign in one of several emails to me. But this gut of mine said "no". See, the alleged scammer made the mistake of saying to me that all paperwork will have to be signed by both parties before payment was received. Mind you, I had not spoken directly to this man, nor had I mentioned another party in email, and, I had not yet completed the Rental Application. I felt challenged. Completing the Rental Application, I noticed that a request for a social security number was missing but drivers license number and birth date is requested. (Please see the Rental Application attached) I submitted the application and couldn't wait to hear back. Finally, I emailed the alleged scammer and was informed that I had been accepted. But before I responded to the alleged scammer I picked up the phone and called the realtor listed on the sign in the front yard of the property. I inquired about the validity of the situation and I was informed that it was all a dream (scam).
