On December 11, 2017, I received a text message from someone claiming to be an employee of H & P Contractors, Inc. which is based out of Chicago, Illinois. In the initial text message, a man, whose name I cannot recall, had asked me if I refinish hardwood floors. I told him that yes, I do, as I have had my own hardwood floor company for a few years now. He told me that his wife and child were tragically killed and that he was in rehab and needed me to pay $1,500.00 dollars to the homeowner of the house that he was buying (the same house that he wanted me to refinish) and that he would then pay me the money I was going to charge to refinish the floors of this home. I told him I did not have $1,500 dollars and that he could send me the check for that amount and I would deposit it. He then sent the check to me via priority mail. Something did not feel right about this entire situation so when I went to my bank, I explained to the teller about what was going on. She Googled the company and said that while it was a legitimate company, it did not seem right to her and that if I had deposited this check, it could look like I was apart of some scam and would have absolutely no way to prove I was in no way involved. The entire time I was at the bank, this man was texting me non-stop asking if I deposited the check yet. One of the most nerve wracking things about this is that every single text message from this person is completely gone from my phone, and I definitely did not erase them. All my photos are gone as well. The only evidence I have of this is the check and the priority envelope he sent me. I am very concerned about this and would like to know what can be done to resolve this. My wife will also be speaking to an attorney on Monday. Please help me any way you can.
