Called using a fake number so it would appear as the local area code. Said they were a "mediation" firm and that we owed money for a loan supposedly taken out in 2010. Lots of red flags: 1) Loan was supposedly taken out in my wife's maiden name 2 years after she changed it, 2) loan was supposedly opened for an address we hadn't lived at in 4 years, 3) refused to provide in writing, or even email, details of the alleged loan as required by law, 4) falsely claimed the statute of limitations on collections is 7 years when it is in fact 6 in WI, 5) threatened to file for a warrant in our county for a felony as the amount (including interest) would be over $500, 6) falsely claimed we had made a settlement payment agreement in 2018 with the original lender and made 2 payments from a checking account that has never existed. Constant threats of putting out a bench warrant, warnings about garnished wages and home liens.

They hide behind the "mediation" label to try and convince you they don't need to comply with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

We initially took them at their word, but wanted to validate the information. No email about an account opening with the lender, ever. We also went to the bank to see if perhaps it was a closed account that we had forgotten about: nope, never existed. The only transaction in the amount stated was from the grocery store in 2011 on an entirely different account. Our banker advised us to ignore them as this is clearly fraud.
