While job searching on Indeed I was reached out to by someone who claimed to be with HCL Technologies, who interviewed via Telegram Messenger App. They sent me very detailed job posting and description, and the 'interview' lasted for about 45 minutes with pretty typical and job related questions. I found it odd that there was no phone call or video to the interview. The next day they reached back out saying I was being offered the job along with a 12 page offer letter. I read through it all, and it all seemed very detailed and intricate. They even included the manager's signature (using the name of an actual employee of the company). They then sent me a cashier's check via email to 'purchase the needeed equipment and software'. I was skeptical and careful prior, but upon receiving this I called both my personal bank as well as the bank the check came from and neither could validate the authenticity of the check. So I sent an email to HCL (their website has a email specifically to verify offer letters because of how often this happens). They took several days to respond, in which time the contact (went by name Jonathan Wheeler) asked me what the delay was. I told him I was verifying everythihng he sent me. He responded "I understand, let me know when you are ready to proceed". The next day I still heard nothing back from HCL, but he deleted the messages off of my phone (I don't know why Telegram allows this) as well as his account. Had I not been careful in not giving them any information (I didn't fill out the I9 or W2 they sent), this could have gone in a complete different direction.
