Type of a scam Employment
I request for a job description sent to my email. She continued and to text me the job title instead. The conversation was via text message only and not verbal on the phone. She gave me instruction for an internet interview with an individual, going by the name Vincent Caponi, via text message on Google Hangout. Again, the interview was text message only.
I thought it was odd that a job interview was being conducted via text message only. As the interview progressed, I was ensured that an employment offer will be sent to me and funding for home laptop and software. Still at this time, no HR or company contact information other than a website URL. So far, I only shared my email address and home address. Few days later, a letter via USPS Priority Mail Express arrived at my address. What was in the package was a check for $4,880.00 and a letter. The check looks-like a bank cashier’s check, but bank logo look like a stamp (ink runs). I pay my rent with a cashier’s check every month, so I’m familiar with a cashier’s check from a bank. Secondly, the letter that accompanied the check was printed on plain paper, not company letterhead, and unsigned. What really raised my suspicions is why would anyone mail such a large sum cashier’s check without asking for a recipient signature.
I’ve stopped all contacts with this “Vincent Caponi” and reporting my suspicions. I’ve included other reasons why I suspect this may be a scam.
SUSPICIONS:
1. Communication is conducted over text message only.
2. No employment offer letter or other HR documentation required.
3. Suspicious cashier’s check for large sum to be deposited into personal bank.
4. Instructions printed on plain paper; not company letterhead.
5. Instruct to deposit cashier’s check into personal bank account and email copy of deposit slip to [email protected] .
6. Could not find or get any reference of any names (on cashier’s check, of interviewer, first text contact, or from instruction letter) to each other.
7. Bank location, return address, and Seton Healthcare Family are located in three completely different states.
