Instead, I send the completed word document. They tell me that the board will decide whether to hire me and about 1 hour later they tell me that I got the job. The offer was way too good for someone in my position. That is when I realized that this likely wasn't a real offer. They did mention they would send me a check to buy supplies for a home office (I'm guessing this is how the scam gets money). I immediately stopped correspondence with the email chain and looked up the contact info (which wasn't included in any of the emails) on the real company's website.
After talking with HR, they confirmed with me that the company wasn't actively looking for any software engineers. The emails included two names of actual employees (I confirmed this with HR), each only mentioned once or twice in a weird sort of way. The real company told me that I was the second person to call about this issue.
