Based on the description provided this was a perfect fit for our family.
I contacted Kathie and we discussed the process and I filed out an application for a meet and greet.
She briefly mentioned that the puppy had some nutrition issue and needed a rimadyl (puppy asprin) twice a day because she was getting over a mild condition of puppy growing pains.
During the meet and greet she was packing multiple my meet and greet with another couple returning a dog. Because of this attention for our visit was extremely limited but we chalked it up to poor timing. She also mentioned right as we were leaving that she had not completed the puppies last set of shots and asked if we could do that for her during our five day trial with our vet. We we excited that the dogs seemed to be acclimating well to each other so just said “we can do that”. That visit cost is $200. During this time at her house she was multi tasking trying to get the returned dog back in the house and take care of what we needed it was frazzling but we wanted to make the best of it. We chalked it up to “a perfect storm” situation.
We agreed to take the puppy for a 5 day trial and once we meet at her house. She informed me that she was also giving the puppy two addition medicines for diarrhea and needed to add it with her meals. We chalked it up to an acceptable amount of care.
For the first three days everything was working out well with acclimating our dog and cat with the puppy.
Late on the third night the puppy had a horrible fever and at 3am we decided to do what was best for the puppy feeling like this was a quickly declining situation and we thought we might be losing her by the minute. We admitted her into our closet ER to try and get her stable. The vet deposit for this care was $1,500.
As we got the puppy settled at a the animal ER we contacted Kathie about 6:30 am. She presided to bark orders that we should have called her and that we needed to move the dog to her vet and that she would not be covering these costs because it wasn’t her vet. She never provided any information for emergency situation and the vet she required is to use. As the people we try to be we told her that we were more worried about the puppy and didn’t want to make the situation worse by moving her around because her care was underway and we said we would cover the costs because we tried to do what was best for the puppy.
It was recommend that the puppy stay over night at that vet and so we kept her there knowing we had paid for her care.
The next day we brought her home and everything seemed ok and hopeful (Friday and Saturday) on Sunday she declined again and we tried to reach Kathie multiple times as she was declining and finally made contact. She asked us to take the puppy to her vet in Salt Lake City and we lived in Ogden. So I was a bit of a drive but we wanted what was best for the dog.
Once we arrived and was able to get the puppy checked in we were told that we could leave and that all information would go through Kathie since it is her dog legally and if Kathie wanted to update us it was her option in doing so.
We were so heartbroken because we had bonded with the puppy and already had some serious, scary moments taking care of her. We were bonded to her for sure and even told Kathie that we would like to stay committed to the adoption process because we were invested in the puppy’s care and wellbeing. We were willing to work this out and give the puppy a good life.
Later that day Kathie called us and accused us of not following her recommendations of medications for the puppy. We did everything she asked including giving an extra rimadyl aspirin that our er vet didn’t recommend. Because we will still in the trial phase we did what she asked to the letter. This included administering all medications from 6am, 3pm, 3am, 5am. We followed the schedule exactly.
We didn’t hear anything else that night after our phone call were she accused us of mistreatment of the puppy. Then the next day she texted me and said “Hi Amber. As promised I am updating you on Maisie. She came home last night and is her bouncy happy self. This is unfortunately a roller coaster of a disease that just has to be written out. And I will ride it out as long as necessary until she is strong and healthy and ready to be adopted. I would like to reimburse you for all the medical expenses at Mountain View as well as your vet. If you could please text me a total amount and your Venmo or PayPal I will send that off today. Thank you”
At this point our hearts were broken because we would not be able to work something out with her care and adopt the puppy who had become such a great addition to the family already.
She had said so many times that she would not reimburse for any care at this point we felt like all she would do is cause of more pain and we responded to her text with “Kathie,
I am having a hard time processing your text. As you can see, We have become very attached to the fantastic soul and tried to do our best for her at all turns.
The news that she is happy and doing well is the only thing that has brought me any comfort today.
God knows how much I love and care about knowing she is happy again.
We put our hearts into this adoption, knowing that just accumulating her to our other animals would be challenging because we want them to be happy also.
Our goal was to be patient and care for everyone involved (people and humans). You gave us little attention from the beginning and no set plan to ensure this was as successful as possible..
With every turn of events, you were too worried about telling what we "should have and not should have done." You focused on telling us you were always available but not really willing to drop what you were doing to help us completely.
You say you protect the dogs in all cases, but you worry about protecting yourself first.
Mae fitted in so well with our family, and we became deeply attached to her, especially after worring about her fever and seeing her so sick.
You have caused us so much hurt, and your money can not repay that. I talked with my husband, and we agreed that we do not want anything in return. We love Mae profoundly and pray for her above all.
Our core values as a family is to value kindness and honesty to others. We try to understand where people are coming from and approach a situation with grace and love.
You have put us in such a horrible position and left us heartbroken. It feels like we have lost another family member in only a few months.
I hope you have learned something from this experience in every aspect. From begging to end. You have not once said your sorry even now in your last text. Shame on you.
A person should reflect on their actions and work to change them. I hope you do that so your dogs can succeed better in their adoption process.”
This experience has been horrible and extremely heartbreaking for us. We had the hopes of adding a new dog to our home because of our resent loss of one other pet of 13 years who was diagnosed with cancer.
Kathie was not upfront or caring to work with. She judged us at ever turn , treated us like we were ignorant [censored] and constantly touted her skills and abilities as a professor at the University of Utah. She is more worried about scamming potential adopters and withholding information until she knows you are excited and attached to the animal.
We have spent a total of $1,800.00 from vet visits, er visit, puppy toys, food and tags. And we didn’t even get options to help work through the puppies needs.
I am reporting her in relation to our experience and the hopes that other potential adopters will not get taken advantage like we have been.
