Type of a scam Employment
After a few conversations via text/email, I began to find it odd that some of the lingo used did not sound like this person was stateside. Additionally, I found it strange that someone was willing to send money, without even a phone interview and or personal information, application etc. but thought maybe this was coming after the phone interview.
While this seemed quite odd and pointing towards fraud, I was still thinking this was through the school. Maybe for a professor etc. So, while odd I sent my information (address, name, phone number and email etc. but I would not provide any further information) and waited for a phone call to speak with someone directly as I was informed would happen in the first text message which I unfourtunatly deleted. But I never actually "agreed to the position". I expressed my interest and was waiting to speak with someone directly, to clarify the position, responsibilities etc.
Things continued to get increase my concern and make me uncomfortable. I asked multiple times for a company name, address, phone number or even a contact name I was given nothing. Originally it was a charity, then a furniture company, then an accounting company. When confronted that they had given me various different stories, they were partnered with the furniture company. At this point, I was obviously not going to get any straight information and felt this was a scam. So, I began ignoring the emails and texts.
Multiple texts came through, during the morning yesterday 6/29/21. I put most of these to spam, because I was positive this was now a scam and if not a scam something I was not comfortable dealing with. I ignored all messages until I began receiving text messages about checks being mailed to my house 6/29/21, via fed-ex with a tracking number. I continued to ignore the messages but they were persistent and said, "the checks arrived at my home at 10:44am". They wanted confirmation I had deposited them and wanted screen shots of my deposit etc. (I do not seem to be able to retrieve the spam texts. I can contact Verizon, if need be, to see if I can obtain them that way)
I was at work and did not see said checks, until I arrived home around 6:30PM. My husband accidentally opened said checks, unaware of what they were. There are 2 checks for $1,990.00 from PNC Bank from a Megan E Benton of Fuquay Varina, NC 27526-2578. The actual package from Fed Ex, comes from Dino's Auto Care Company 13701 NE 175th St. Woodinville WA 98072 United States US. None of this match anything from what I had been told.
I immediately text and requested once again a company name, company address, FEIN# or a W-9 form. They refused and assured me they were a legit furniture company, who worked with Hitech accounting. I text back and stated I was not comfortable with the situation and would be returning checks back to sender. I have not heard back since. Once again, I did not agree to the position. I was under the impression this was going to move to a phone interview and require a resume, application etc.
I do not want to get in trouble for these checks. Upon further review, they do seem to be fake. They look to be hand cut from paper and do not have the texture, like most cashier checks. The routing number is for Virginia, not N Carolina (PNC Virginia ). There is a woman by the name Meagan Benton in Fuquay Varina NC, but it is spelled differently, and the middle initial is not the same. Additionally, I find it odd they used the same name as mine and even spelled the same the same Megan, when the email blatantly states Michael not Megan.
Lastly, it looks as though the address on the check, is for a property which went up for rent, approximately 2 weeks ago. Listed on Apartments.com so the address is most likely vacant.
I am going to contact the bank. Should I shred or return to sender. Please advise.
Thank you
Sincerely
Megan C. Meister
