I was seeking employment as a copywriter via Upwork and submitted a proposal for editing services. I was directed by an Amber Wiese to Telegram messenger to interview with David Smith, the hiring manager for National Association of Insurance Companies. I was told that I would be given a 20 minute interview through Telegram. At the conclusion of the interview, I was offered the job as a copywriter and given a list of duties and benefits. I requested the weekend to make my decision and look over the hiring contract. Upon giving my acceptance, I was told that I needed to purchase “working materials” and was given a check for mobile deposit. After depositing the check, I alerted David that the funds would not be available until Friday at 9 am. David then requested that I use my own funds to cover the costs of a printer, cabinet, MacBook Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. I would then be compensated by the check once it was cleared. I was requested to Zelle $500 to a third party “vendor.” When I refused and said I would rather wait until the funds were deposited, David Smith tried to convince me that the process was “secure.” I expressed being uncomfortable with the process and would rather wait until Friday to know if the deposit was successful. David Smith stopped responding after I told him my bank was uncertain if the check would clear, I was not interested in the job anymore, and to please stop the deposit. I am still waiting for the deposit to be rescinded. My bank is aware of the situation. David Smith has ceased contact with me.
