I reached out to Matt Rizvi on Craigslist in 2016 and he and Monica Montalvo met me at my house in Houston and provided estimates for custom cabinets and bookcases. I hired MM Roofing & Cabinets after visiting what I believed was a customer's house in the Houston area where Matt said they were building cabinets. He never rang the doorbell and we entered the customers house so I could see the cabinet work in progress. I paid the company a 50% deposit in the amount of $3,400. Monica deposited the check using a phone app and pictures of the check which cleared my bank which I was unaware of at the time that such an app existed (new technology). Matt then called me later to say there was a problem with the check so I met him at my bank and gave him another $3400 cash so he was then in possession of the full $6800 and no work had begun on cabinets which were to be delivered in January 2017. I chased Matt & Monica for weeks until I realized I may have been scammed and requested by money back via a demand letter in late February 2017 after they had missed several deadlines for the cabinets which I discovered were supposedly being built in south Texas somewhere and they were actually sub-contracting the cabinet work out and did not actually have or control a company that built cabinets. After lots of excuses, I asked for pictures of the progress which I never received. I hired a private investigator and found out they lived in McAllen, TX area though he also gave me a Houston address that was also different from the business card. I believe the Houston address, which I visited trying to find out what was happening, was owned by his father and his sister and her husband lived there and I spoke with the husband. I have lots of documentation and pages of text messages from 2016-2017 where I was checking on status of cabinets and where they promised to reimburse me and never did. Matt also attempted to get me to allow him to replace my roof with presumably another down payment but he hadn't delivered on the cabinets so I refused. I will never forget and will always check to see what they are up to and what new business name and address they are using.
