Door-to-door salesperson in Toronto said he had just done a job down the street and had left-over materials and workers not doing anything for rest of day (this was 2023 July 27, mid aft.) and would do work for cash at reduced rate if I had anything. I agreed to masonry work on verandah for $7000 and workers began. I E-transferred $2500 (to alonsox.2icloud.com); pointing on stonework completed that aft and they returned next morning. I agreed to more work for $12,500. Workers returned on July 28 & 29, and completed work. I suspect the work is very poor quality but won't know till the winter comes and work falls apart. With combination of cash and etransfers I paid total of $15,500. Dealt with man who identifies as Frank McCann; said his business partner was Diego. Frank said he, Frank, had 4 brothers in the business, I met one who called himself James, the original caller at my door. I withheld $4000 after two hour plus conversation with Frank on July 29. He promised to provide me with list of products used, 10 references (names, phone numbers and emails) of people for whom he has done similar work covering the last five years and a written 15-year guarantee that any work not satisfactory would be fixed without cost. I would not have to pay the outstanding $4000 until these conditions were met. I have not heard from him since nor have I tried to contact him. I have been foolish. The agreed-upon work has been done but it was not worth $15,500. I don't want anyone else taken in by this company. He acknowledged they were an unregistered company--"just a family business". In addition to not paying government taxes I am concerned that the workers are not having their rights protected. A crew of four workers remained after Frank left on 29th. None spoke English. With the help of Google translator I learned that three of them have been in Canada only two months since arriving from Mexico.
