Gutter Installation and Roofing

Safeguard Roofing and Basement came to our place to do a Gutter installation estimate. After his initial estimate “Ben” suggested to do a free roof inspection. We were shown pictures of a hole in our roof and shingles that were in bad shape. Ben started to give us deals for the roof and full gutter installation. After looking up the website and reviews on several websites we decided to go ahead. Ben filled out a contract with his companies logo and had men start the work. Ben requested 2 separate deposits within two days of the men starting the work. After giving a $6,000 deposit, Ben said his roofers would be back next week. After a few days , the 2 me who started the work came back to our house stating that Ben stopped answering the phone and hasn’t paid them. We couldn’t reach him and even drove to his “business address” which was someone else’s house. Ben ended up calling us, saying he lost his work phone. After a few more cancellations and red flags such as saying he wasn’t doing half the work in the contract, we decided to cancel the project and requested our deposit. Ben claimed he would do a full refund however has disappeared and no deposit was returned.

The company in question came by my home and asked whether I needed some pruning of the many trees on my property. I agreed to an initial pruning of front yard trees for $500. The job was satisfactory. The company person (Ben) then asked whether I would like a couple of much larger branches pruned from two trees at the back of my property. I agreed to pay $1300 for this service. They came by the next day and began work without notifying me of their presence. They did prune one major branch but left a ragged stump instead of a clean cut. Another somewhat smaller branch on an adjacent tree was pruned...poorly. Yet another branch that was supposed to be cut down was not even touched. What I am really upset about, however, is that the company failed to take away the large amount of cut material and debris, leaving it instead by the side of my house on a public laneway. The spokesperson (Ben) told me they would be back 'on Friday' (the cutting was done on Tuesday, January 9th). I (foolishly) paid the agreed upon monies for the job, trusting they would come back and take away the large pile of debris. They have never returned despite my calling them numerous times and despite their numerous promises to complete the job.
