I was working outside on the front lawn, when a man in a late model, black, double cab pick up truck stopped across the street and came towards me offering his advertising card for "professional home improvement services." He said his company was paving in the neighbourhood, and mumbled the names of a couple of people, though he didn't say what street they lived on. He said that it's expensive to get the equipment out of the yard, so if he could find two or three other people who were willing to have their driveways paved, then he could offer us all a discount. He asked some questions, engaged me in conversation, and wondered if I might be interested in having my driveway paved soon. When I said yes, and tentatively agreed to have his company do the driveway, he went back to the truck, got some yellow spray paint and sprayed some marks on my driveway. He said he would draw up a contract that evening and come back the next day. He was offering a price that was approximately half what my neighbours paid last summer. In the meantime, I checked out his company's website, aspects of which seemed odd, and I noticed that the company's address is in Toronto, and not local. When I used the street view function on Google maps, the address turned out to be a field under a hydro corridor in Mississauga. When he came back the next day, I told him that I was going to get some additional quotes for the driveway and would prefer to use a local company. Even though it was raining that day and he had already told me that the weather wasn't good for paving, once I said I was going to put a hold on paving with him, he said that the truck was already loaded up. I told him I hadn't signed anything and hadn't formally agreed to anything. He left quickly, and I'm sure that I narrowly escaped a scam.
