We were approached by an alleged roofing contractor working on a neighbour's property and informed that we had a "serious problem" with our roof. This individual offered to fix the issue, and then began escalating the problems. A first "contract" was signed, then after materials had been removed from our roof we were trapped by threats and coercion into increasingly exorbitant "contracts" for a complete roof replacement, including sheathing and structural "repairs". The job was undertaken by a crew of ******* workers. On completion of the work we paid in full, realizing that we were being seriously overcharged. Two banks drafts were demanded -- to be paid not to Thornton Roofing Construction, but to an individual (Li Le Sun). Our bank's internal Fraud Unit independently identified this as a scam operation and returned our money. A subsequent inspection by a respected local firm showed that many of the materials promised in the Thornton "contracts" were NOT supplied, improper installation methods were employed, and that were several infractions of the Ontario Building Code. The roof installed by Thornton was deemed to have "NO VALUE" and needed to be replaced to ensure structural integrity and code compliance. The original roof probably would have lasted another 4-5 years with no problem. At our bank's request, we filed a report with York Regional Police and an investigation is currently underway. Several other homeowners in our area have been similarly targeted by this operation.
