Homecare and Family Grant Support Program Reports & Reviews (1)

- Snowflake, AZ, USA

I had just requested to be friends of facebook of my 88 year old Aunt. She replied immediately to me thru Messenger, which surprised me, but nice. After hello, she asked me if I had heard of this Federal grant for homecare. She said to text this number to see if I qualified, that she had gotten $70,000 from them and that every american tax paying citizen was entitled to this grant which you did not have to pay back. the number is 615-410-2626. Because it was my trusted aunt, I texted them. I immediately qualified for $70,000, too. I was then asked how I wanted to pay the delivery fee. That's when I knew it was probably a scam so I messengered my aunt telling her this and asked if she had already paid the money and had she received the $70,000. She replied that she also was skeptical, but she had paid the delivery fee of $325 and received her monies already in CASH. This is all through Messenger with me Aunt's picture attached to it.

So I texted back to this agency and asked how I pay them. They instructed me to get $320 in Steam Gift Cards and then send a picture of the card and the scratched off pin number on each card. Then the money would be delivered the next morning.

I went to Walmart to buy the cards, they did not carry Steam cards. Now I was on a mission to see how far this was going to go. I looked up Steam Gift cards, whom, by the way, were very high security and very professional about all of this ultimately. Apparently, for gamers, it's a common way to send monies, buy new games, etc. I purchased the Gift cards online, but the verification process was taking some time. In the meantime, I was getting harrassed constantly by this group by text....."are you sending the information?" "are you still driving or what?", "are you at home now or what?", "have you get it online now?" (exact quotes) on and on and on til into the evening. Also, my aunt kept messengering me asking if I paid the fee, are you getting the money delivered, etc. At 830pm, my aunt writes "Good night, let me know what's going on with them tomorrow morning". I hadn't read her text til 1130pm, and I responded "this is gonna be great, ***, I hope to get the money tomorrow.", just fishing to see what response I would get. AT 2am, my little 88yo auntie wrote back "Sure, if you pay the delivery fee for them". Luckily, I had contacted the support/chat for the Steam cards and asked to cancel my order, they asked me if there was a particular reason, I told them that I was being scammed and the scammers were using their company gift cards as part of the coverup for the fees paid out. They immediately wanted more information and cancelled/refunded our monies.

I am going to contact my aunt by phone today, since messenger is not really her and let her know that she has been hacked. This is so upsetting. I tried to report this scam to Facebook, but there is no clear and easy way to report the scam so I have to keep working at it. If there is anyway to get this info out to others, please do. Any other way, I would have never responded to this group, but at first, I kept thinking "well, if Auntie *** recommended this (and she's an educated career woman from Northwestern University!) then maybe it's okay. THAT IS WHY THIS SCAM IS EVEN SCARIER!!!
