In attempting to book a hotel, I was directed to a website: reservations.com . There was lots of information about the hotel, testimonials, and detailed information and nothing suggested there was anything fishy so i went ahead and booked via the website. I received a detailed confirmation back and everything looked legitimate. Days later when i tried to reschedule the dates, i was unable to reach the hotel via the phone number on the website and listed on the confirmation email (it didn't work), and when i navigated through their website to 'make changes to your reservation" , the link did not work either. I then checked my credit card statement and saw that it was charged in USD (i live in Canada and booked at a Canadian hotel) at a higher rate than on the confirmation notice. I phoned the actual hotel directly and they had no record of my reservation. I lodged a fraud investigation through my credit card company. I am not sure if i will be refunded. I have since checked this company out online and see there is lots of reference to it being a scam. This is outright fraud. AI tools are providing scammers ability to create professional replications of legitimate sites and optimization tools to give them high visibility on search engines like google. It is almost impossible to discern between a legitimate website and a scammer website now a days. I will never again book hotels via a website but call the company directly get reservation agent name, employee ID and ensure i use a credit card only for that purpose and only for the reservation fee (small). Even these methods won't necessarily protect me. What a disgrace.
