My grandparents were called in california by a scammer posing as a lawyer in New York. The scammer told my grandparents that my brother was in jail in New York for hitting a pregnant woman from behind in a car. They informed that the baby may or may not make it. They explained that in order to get my brother out of jail, they needed 4K to be sent immediately via mail in cash in two envelopes. My grandfather told the scammers that he wanted to talk to his grandson’s parents first because they need to know. My grandfather called my parents in Texas and also gave my parents phone number to the scammers. The scammers contacted my parents. My parents listened to the same story and unfortunately acted on it by sending the 4K as they requested. The scammer told my parents exactly where to go to send the money and that they need to tell the UPS person that the package needs to be sent before 8am. My mother apparently went to a different location and the scammers became frustrated. The scammer told my mother to send the package in my brother’s name. The scammer told my parents that they would be refunded in 7-14 business days. The scammer told my parents that the money would be processed through The House of Conduct and to send the money to:

My parents were unaware of the laws prohibiting cash being sent via mail which they are now aware of. The scammers later called and told my parents that my brother was moved to a medical facility and was being treated for injurious that they were very descriptive about. The scammers put a man on the phone posing as a doctor and his name was Doctor Johnson.

My grandparents notified me and I called my brother. We both intervened by stopping having my parents go the UPS store and stop the money from being mailed. I called ahead to the UPS store to inform them of what happened and that my mother was on her way to get the money back. Shortly thereafter, my brother received a call from a woman going by the name Elizabeth Gordon. She said she was a UPS Fraud Agent and she was investigating this particular scamming group as they had numerous amounts of mail going out to that same address. My brother and I gave her very little information and collected her Agent ID number. She ended the call abruptly as if it were disconnected. I tried calling back numerous times and the call would not go through and then later would say the call is rejected. The woman also called my grandparents and my parents convincing them that she was a UPS Fraud Agent and that they should not notify anyone as that would tip the scammers. She said they planned on sending a fake package to the scammers and then they would be taken into custody between that day and the next. My parents followed her instruction and did not go to the police. I called my parents again and intervened telling them not to talk to anyone else and to go to the police. My mother went to the Wichita Falls, Texas police department and was told that they do not handle those sorts of complaints and to contact the BBB. The police officer was rude and unconcerned from how my mother described it.
